A Major Oaks Road crossover is being added at Wildwood Crescent in Pickering, with the Region of Durham expecting it to be operating by the end of 2026.
The Region announced the work on October 16, saying it is collaborating with the City of Pickering. Construction is already underway, but no exact opening day was provided.
How the crossover will work
The Region describes pedestrian crossovers as designated crossing locations using special pavement markings, signs and, in some cases, lights. They allow people to cross at locations without conventional stop signs or traffic signals.
Drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the full width of the roadway to pedestrians. Motorists must not pass another vehicle at the crossing and must wait until pedestrians have completely cleared the road before proceeding.
The announcement does not specify every feature of the final installation. The conceptual featured image is not an engineering drawing or a depiction of the completed site.
The project supports Durham Vision Zero, the Region’s long-term road-safety plan aimed at eliminating deaths and serious injuries on its roadways. The notice does not announce a collision-reduction result at this location.
Drivers are asked to use caution around people walking, cycling and working in the area. Current construction and traffic information is available through the Region’s TrafficWatch service. The anticipated end-of-year operation date remains a target, not a confirmed activation date.
