Brock Road left-turn signals are being upgraded at Taunton Road in Pickering, where Durham Region plans fully protected left turns for traffic approaching from every direction.
In its October 16 notice, the Region says construction is underway and the modified signals are expected to be operating by the end of 2026. It has not provided an exact activation day.
Brock Road is Regional Road 1 and Taunton Road is Regional Road 4. This is the Pickering intersection, not the similarly named Brock Street and Taunton Road area in Whitby.
Dedicated arrows separate turning traffic
Protected left-turn signals use a dedicated green arrow so drivers make their left turn while opposing traffic is stopped. The Region says separating those movements reduces the risk of collisions between turning and oncoming vehicles.
The notice describes protection for all directions at this intersection. It is separate from the earlier announcement about specific turning movements at Taunton and Harmony in Oshawa and Highway 2 and Courtice Road in Clarington.
The work is part of Durham Vision Zero, the Region’s long-term commitment to eliminating road deaths and serious injuries. The announcement explains the intended safety benefit but does not report measured results from the new signals, which are not yet confirmed operational.
The Region acknowledges construction may be disruptive and asks drivers to be cautious around pedestrians, cyclists and work crews. Its TrafficWatch service provides current construction and traffic information. Motorists should continue following the signals and signs actually in place while work proceeds.
