Brock Road traffic signals are being installed at Usman Road in Pickering to create a controlled crossing for motorists and pedestrians, Durham Region announced on October 16.
The intersection is on Brock Road, also designated Regional Road 1. The Region says construction is ongoing until December 2026 and anticipates the signals will be operating by the end of the year.
No exact switch-on date, daily work hours or detailed lane-closure schedule was included in the announcement. Drivers should not assume that the installation is already in service.
The stated purpose is to improve safety for both people walking across the roadway and drivers using the intersection. The work forms part of Durham Vision Zero, the Region’s long-term plan to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on Durham roadways.
This installation is distinct from the protected left-turn upgrade announced the same day at Brock Road and Taunton Road. The two projects concern different intersections and different signal changes.
The Region says it will try to complete the work as efficiently as possible while recognizing that construction can cause disruption. People travelling through the area are asked to be careful around pedestrians, cyclists and workers.
For current construction and traffic information, residents can consult the Region’s TrafficWatch service. The published end-of-year operation target is not a guarantee that the lights will be activated on a particular day; a confirmed change would require a further update.
