Durham Regional Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man who damaged a Durham Region Transit bus while exiting the vehicle in Oshawa earlier this spring.
The incident took place on April 19 aboard a Durham Transit bus travelling through downtown Oshawa. According to police, the suspect was riding the bus when he caused property damage upon leaving by kicking the glass bus door before fleeing the area on foot.
The Durham Transit bus damaged Oshawa incident has prompted an investigation by the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch, which is now turning to the community for assistance in identifying the individual responsible.
The suspect is described as a Black male, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old, with a beard and black hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a blue hoodie with the word Florida printed on it along with steel-toed boots.
Durham Region Transit buses serve thousands of riders daily across Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and Clarington, and vandalism on public transit affects everyone who relies on the service. Damage to bus doors and windows can take vehicles out of service, leading to delays and disruptions for commuters who depend on Durham Transit to get to work, school, and appointments.
Police are asking anyone who may have been on the bus that day or who was in the downtown Oshawa area on April 19 and saw anything suspicious to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in speaking with anyone who has cellphone footage, dash cam video, or surveillance camera recordings from the area at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information about the Durham Transit bus damaged Oshawa case is asked to contact Detective Barr of the East Division Criminal Investigations Branch at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2703.
Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
Durham Police continue to encourage transit riders to report any incidents of vandalism or disorderly behaviour on Durham Transit buses, as passenger safety and the integrity of the transit system remain top priorities for the region.
