Bennett Road in Bowmanville is closed between the Highway 401 westbound on-ramp and Lake Road while crews continue reconstructing the bridge over the highway.
The closure began at 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, and is scheduled to end at 6 a.m. Thursday, September 10.
Bennett Road detour in place
Drivers cannot travel through the affected section during the closure. The Municipality of Clarington says posted detour routes are in place and emergency access will be maintained throughout the work.
Motorists travelling in south Bowmanville should allow extra time and follow temporary signs rather than attempting to enter the closed construction area. The municipality has not identified a change to Highway 401 traffic for this specific closure.
The overnight restriction supports demolition and reconstruction of the Bennett Road bridge. It is part of the Ministry of Transportation’s broader Highway 401 interchange improvement work in Bowmanville.
Ongoing bridge reconstruction
This is not the first traffic restriction connected with the project. Highway 401 and Bennett Road have faced previous scheduled closures while crews removed and rebuilt parts of the bridge. The September 9 closure is a newly announced work window with its own start and reopening times.
Construction schedules can change because of weather, site conditions or the progress of the work. Drivers should check Clarington’s road-closure notices and Ontario 511 for any extension or additional restrictions before travelling.
Clarington is asking drivers to plan ahead, leave additional travel time and obey traffic-control staff and posted detour signs near the work zone.
