A Whitby mini forest planting is scheduled for Central Park on Saturday, October 17, bringing the project from summer soil preparation to the addition of native trees and shrubs.
The date appears in Little Forests Durham’s official fall schedule. Current October 15 local reporting has renewed attention to the group’s Whitby projects, but readers should distinguish the upcoming Central Park event from an earlier Windsor Bay Park planting date.
Central Park follows summer preparation
Volunteers prepared the Central Park site on June 20. The group’s approach uses layers of cardboard, compost and mulch to suppress grass and weeds and improve the ground ahead of planting.
The project uses the Miyawaki approach, with closely spaced native plants intended to develop into a small urban woodland. Little Forests Durham describes wildlife habitat, shade and climate resilience as goals of its work.
Its September 9 schedule lists Central Park for October 17, an Uxbridge planting honouring Steve Snoddon for October 24, and a Clarington planting at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex for October 31.
Check the correct park and date
Windsor Bay Park, at 301 Front Street East, was listed for October 3. That date has already passed; it should not be presented as a second upcoming Whitby planting alongside Central Park.
The October 15 coverage describes municipal support and community partnerships behind the Whitby work. The organizer’s schedule is the primary source for the planting dates.
People interested in the Whitby mini forest project should check Little Forests Durham’s current event information for registration, start times and any last-minute changes. A new planting date or cancellation has not been announced in the material reviewed.
