A Oshawa Centre imitation firearms arrest has raised safety concerns after three youths were taken into custody following reports of individuals carrying weapons inside the busy shopping mall.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at approximately 7:50 p.m., when Durham Regional Police responded to an armed person call at the Oshawa Centre, located at 419 King Street West. Mall security initially alerted authorities after observing three males believed to be carrying concealed handguns within the mall.

Police quickly mobilized, with members of the Tactical Support Unit and front-line officers attending the scene. Upon arrival, officers located the suspects and safely took them into custody without incident. The swift response ensured there was no escalation and that shoppers and staff remained safe during the situation.

Following a search, officers discovered that the weapons in possession of the suspects were imitation firearms. While not real, such items can closely resemble actual weapons and pose serious public safety concerns, particularly in crowded environments like shopping centres.

The individuals involved were identified as a 12-year-old, 13-year-old, and 14-year-old male. Due to their age, their identities are protected under youth justice laws. After being processed by police, all three youths were released unconditionally into the custody of their parents.

In addition to their release, the youths were issued formal trespass notices, effectively banning them from returning to the Oshawa Centre. These measures are often used to prevent repeat incidents and reinforce safety protocols within public spaces.

The Oshawa Centre imitation firearms arrest highlights ongoing concerns about the use of replica weapons in public areas. Even though imitation firearms are not real, they can cause panic, trigger emergency responses, and put both the public and law enforcement at risk. Authorities continue to stress the importance of understanding the serious consequences associated with carrying such items.

Durham Regional Police are continuing their investigation and are asking anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward. Members of the public can contact the Central East Division Criminal Investigations Branch or provide anonymous tips through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in public spaces and the role of community members in reporting suspicious activity. Quick action by mall security and police helped ensure the situation was resolved safely and efficiently.

While no injuries were reported, the event underscores the need for continued awareness and education around the risks associated with imitation firearms, particularly among youth.
