New Durham College TeachingCity projects are putting student work into Oshawa planning, emergency training, public art and waterfront information.
Architectural Technology students worked with city planners to reimagine properties along a future transit corridor. Their proposals considered development rules, affordable housing, sustainability and pedestrian experience before being presented to city staff.
Mixed-reality firefighter training
The college plans to hire three Game – Art graduates through its Mixed Reality Capture Studio. They will help create an application that simulates examining a building during a fire call, helping candidates for Oshawa Fire Services leadership roles practise identifying hazards.
Art and wayfinding
Six Fine Arts student works have been installed on signs along the Joseph Kolodzie Bike Trail. Students also contributed to digital wayfinding at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park, including historical and ecological information, 360-degree views and an audio tour.
The Durham College TeachingCity projects also include Fire 911 Communications placements. The college said one former placement student later earned a department position and is now training.
