A 16-year-old boy suffered life-altering injuries after a Pickering e-scooter collision involving a minivan at Whites Road and Finch Avenue on Tuesday evening.

Durham Regional Police said officers from West Division were called to the intersection at approximately 7 p.m. on September 1, 2026, following reports of a collision between a motor vehicle and an electric scooter.

Emergency responders found the 16-year-old rider with serious, life-altering injuries. He was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre for treatment. Police said his condition remained stable following the collision.

The 43-year-old driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Police investigate Pickering collision

Members of the Durham Regional Police Service Collision Investigation Unit attended the area to examine the scene and collect evidence.

The intersection and surrounding roads were closed for several hours while investigators carried out their work. Police have not yet announced what factors may have contributed to the crash, and the cause remains under investigation.

The Pickering e-scooter collision occurred at a busy intersection in the city, where Whites Road is a major north-south route and Finch Avenue connects residential neighbourhoods in the area.

Police have not announced any charges in connection with the incident. Investigators have also not released additional details about the teenager, and no further information has been provided about the nature of his injuries beyond describing them as life-altering.

Investigators are asking anyone who saw the collision or may have information about what happened to come forward. Witnesses could help police establish the sequence of events leading up to the impact and determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Lan of the DRPS Collision Investigation Unit at 905-579-1520 ext. 5216. The service can also be reached toll-free at 1-888-579-1520.

Anonymous tips may be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Police say tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward when information assists an investigation.

E-scooter safety remains important

The incident highlights the importance of awareness among drivers and riders when sharing intersections, crosswalks and other parts of the road network.

Electric scooters are increasingly used for short trips in many communities, but riders can be especially vulnerable when involved in collisions with larger vehicles. Intersections can create additional risks because drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and scooter riders may all be moving through the same space at the same time.

Road users are encouraged to remain alert, check carefully before turning and watch for people crossing at intersections.

For e-scooter riders, visibility and predictable movement are also important, particularly during evening hours when changing light conditions can make it more difficult for drivers to see smaller road users.

The investigation into the Pickering e-scooter collision is continuing. Police have not released further details about the injured teenager or indicated when the investigation is expected to be completed.

Durham Regional Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information as investigators work to determine exactly how the collision occurred.
