The Durham fall colours season is underway, with Darlington Provincial Park in Clarington reporting early leaf changes as of the beginning of September.
Ontario’s fall colours typically become most impressive from mid-September through mid-October, although timing varies depending on location, tree species and weather.
Darlington Provincial Park reports early colour change
Darlington Provincial Park is one of the first places Durham residents can monitor through Ontario Parks’ official fall colour reporting system.
As of Sept. 3, the park remained predominantly green, with approximately 10 per cent colour change and 10 per cent leaf fall reported.
That means visitors should expect mostly summer-green scenery for now rather than a full autumn display.
Ontario Parks recommends the viewing platform along the Burk Trail as one of the best locations inside Darlington to watch the seasonal transformation.
The lookout sits roughly in the middle of the Burk Trail and offers views over the surrounding landscape as the trees gradually change colour.
Darlington Provincial Park also remains open for day use throughout the year, while its camping season continues into October.
Purple Woods offers maple-filled fall scenery
Another strong option for Durham residents is Purple Woods Conservation Area in north Oshawa.
Located on the Oak Ridges Moraine, the 41-acre conservation area includes a mature sugar maple forest that is approximately 150 years old.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority identifies Purple Woods as a year-round hiking destination known for attractive autumn colours.
Visitors can explore the Sugar Shack Trail or the shorter accessible Discovery Walk while watching the forest transition from green to yellow, orange and red.
Because sugar maples are responsible for some of Ontario’s brightest autumn reds and oranges, the property can become particularly colourful later in the season.
Durham Forest offers autumn trails in Uxbridge
Residents looking for a longer outdoor outing can also head north to the Durham Regional Forest near Uxbridge.
The forest includes several tracts and an extensive network of trails used for hiking, mountain biking and other outdoor activities.
Its combination of forested trails and rolling terrain makes it another option for residents hoping to experience the Durham fall colours away from more urban areas.
Visitors should check current trail and parking information before heading out, particularly during busy fall weekends.
When could Durham colours reach their best?
Across much of Ontario, the most colourful period usually develops between mid-September and mid-October.
Maple trees often produce some of the most vivid reds and oranges during the earlier part of peak fall viewing, while other species can extend yellow and gold colours farther into October.
