Durham Region residents planning a home improvement project over the long weekend should check store hours before heading out on Labour Day.
Durham Labour Day hours vary by retailer on Monday, Sept. 7, with several Home Depot locations currently listed as closed for the holiday while Canadian Tire and Home Hardware schedules can differ from store to store.
Labour Day is a public holiday in Ontario, meaning businesses may operate with reduced hours or close entirely.
Durham Home Depot stores closed for Labour Day
Home Depot’s current store listings show several Durham Region locations as closed Monday for the Labour Day holiday.
Locations currently showing “Holiday Closed” include Home Depot stores in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, north Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville.
The affected locations include:
- Pickering at 1105-A Kingston Rd.
- Ajax at 256-260 Kingston Rd. E.
- Whitby at 1700 Victoria St. E.
- Whitby North at 4200 Garden St.
- Oshawa at 1481 Harmony Rd. N.
- Bowmanville at 120 Clarington Blvd.
The holiday closure also applies to services such as tool rental and outdoor garden centres where those services are available at the listed stores.
Residents who need supplies from Home Depot should therefore consider shopping Sunday or waiting until stores reopen Tuesday.
Canadian Tire hours can vary by Durham location
Canadian Tire follows a different model.
Individual Canadian Tire locations are independently owned and operated by associate dealers, meaning Labour Day hours can vary between stores.
The retailer advises customers to check their preferred location online or contact the store directly before making a trip.
Durham has Canadian Tire locations in communities including Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa.
Even when an online page displays regular Monday hours, customers should look for holiday notices because Canadian Tire warns that holiday schedules may differ from standard operating hours.
Auto service centres, garden centres and other departments may also follow different schedules from the main store.
Home Hardware stores set their own holiday schedules
Home Hardware customers should take a similar approach.
Because Home Hardware stores are independently owned and operated, individual retailers determine their own Labour Day schedules.
Some locations could remain open, others could use reduced hours and some may close for the holiday.
Customers should confirm the schedule through the individual store’s listing or by calling before leaving home.
Check before making a Labour Day trip
Holiday hours sometimes change and different departments within the same retailer can have separate schedules.
Residents looking for lumber, tools, paint, garden products or last-minute repair supplies should check the retailer’s official store locator shortly before travelling.
The most important difference for Durham shoppers this Labour Day is that the Home Depot locations checked across the region are currently listed as closed Monday, while Canadian Tire and Home Hardware schedules require location-by-location verification.
Regular hours are generally expected to resume Tuesday, Sept. 8.
With Labour Day falling on Monday, Sept. 7, checking Durham Labour Day hours in advance could prevent an unnecessary trip during the final long weekend of summer.
