An Ajax man faces 14 additional Ajax home arson charges after a fire destroyed an unoccupied residence and damaged neighbouring homes.
The August 24 fire occurred near Rossland Road West and Church Street North. Police said the empty house was destroyed and nearby residences sustained significant damage. People inside one neighbouring home escaped safely.
Joint police investigation
Investigators allege other homes were doused with an accelerant but did not catch fire. A joint Durham and Toronto police investigation identified a suspect, who was arrested September 28.
The 24-year-old Ajax resident faces allegations including break and enter, arson, attempted arson, arson with disregard for human life, mischief, possessing incendiary material, conspiracy and breach of probation. The charges have not been proven in court.
Police say the accused had previously been charged in connection with an August 27 arson at a Scarborough residence belonging to MP Salma Zahid. A second suspect in that separate incident remained outstanding.
Anyone with information about the Ajax home arson charges is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
