Two former senior employees of Ajax FC Soccer Club face charges after police alleged that more than $650,000 was taken from the Ajax soccer club over a two-year period.
Durham Regional Police began investigating in December 2024 after receiving reports of irregular banking transactions connected to the club. Investigators reviewed several years of financial statements before laying charges, according to police information reported September 29.
Police allege transfers from club accounts
Police allege that more than $650,000 in league funds was transferred from Ajax Soccer Club accounts to various other accounts between early 2023 and 2024.
The two accused had worked as the club’s executive director and general manager. Vicki Scott, 50, of Whitby, is charged with fraud over $5,000, laundering proceeds of crime and breach of trust. Richard Karikari, 47, of Ajax, is charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of proceeds of crime and breach of trust.
Both accused were released on undertakings. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the charges do not establish guilt.
Ajax FC says leadership has changed
Ajax FC told CityNews that the accused have not been affiliated with the soccer club in any capacity since 2024. The club said it is now operating under a new executive team and board of directors that have no relationship with the people charged in the case.
Club president David Cadenas Jimenez said the current leadership has been working to address issues arising from past events, support affected members and strengthen governance. The statement also emphasized transparency, accountability and the interests of the community.
The case concerns alleged financial activity involving a community sports organization, not the conduct of current players, coaches, volunteers or families. No further loss figure beyond the amount alleged by police was released in the reports reviewed for this article.
Investigation produced two sets of charges
The Ajax soccer club fraud investigation moved from a review of reported banking irregularities to charges after financial records were analyzed. Police have not announced a trial date or disclosed the specific accounts that allegedly received the transfers.
Because the matter is before the courts, future developments may include first appearances, disclosure proceedings or changes to the charges. Any such development would require separate confirmation from police or court records.
Ajax FC offers competitive and recreational soccer programs in the community. Its statement indicates that present leadership is continuing club operations while responding to concerns connected to the alleged earlier activity.
