Durham police are seeking a 23-year-old Ajax man after a Tesla allegedly struck two officers during an investigation in north Oshawa.
The Oshawa officers struck investigation stems from an incident at about 1:05 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22. Police said Central East Division officers on proactive patrol saw an Acura sedan travelling at high speed without its lights on along Simcoe Street North.
Officers tried to stop the Acura, but it allegedly fled. Police later found it parked and unoccupied in a residential driveway. Following a neighbourhood search, officers located the alleged driver hiding in a backyard and arrested him.
Tesla allegedly reversed into officers
Police said a search of the Acura found drugs and a replica firearm. While officers continued that investigation, a Tesla SUV allegedly entered the area at high speed.
Officers approached when the Tesla stopped. Police allege the driver then reversed, struck two officers and fled.
One officer was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A second officer attended hospital with minor injuries.
Ajax man wanted on multiple allegations
Investigators identified the alleged Tesla driver as Yaseen Waggan, 23, of Ajax. Police said he is wanted for flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, failing to identify himself to an officer and failing to remain.
The allegations have not been proven in court. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Broadfoot of the Durham Regional Police Service Offender Management Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5357. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
The Oshawa officers struck investigation remains active, and police were still seeking the accused when the latest releases were published Monday.
