The Region of Durham has issued an advisory regarding a scheduled infrastructure improvement project that will affect traffic flow in the Town of Whitby. Specifically, municipal authorities have announced a full closure of the intersection situated at the junction of Thickson Road and Wentworth Street. This temporary disruption to the roadway network is intended to facilitate essential maintenance work required to ensure the long-term integrity of the area’s transportation infrastructure.

The closure is scheduled to take place overnight, commencing on the evening of May 30 at approximately 7:00 p.m. and concluding by the morning of May 31 at roughly 7:00 a.m. Planning the construction activities for these overnight hours is a strategic decision aimed at reducing the impact on the daily volume of commuter traffic that typically utilizes this major intersection during peak business hours. Minimizing disruption to the morning and evening rush hours is a top priority for municipal planners.

The primary objective of this overnight operation is the safe and efficient completion of surface asphalt paving. This specific type of resurfacing activity is a critical component of regular regional road maintenance, designed to repair surface wear, fill minor cracks, and provide a smoother, more durable driving surface for the public. By conducting this paving work within a confined overnight window, the Region aims to complete the necessary upgrades without causing prolonged delays to the broader transportation network. Fresh asphalt requires time to cool and set, which is best achieved when traffic volume is at its lowest.

During the period when the intersection is fully closed to through traffic, motorists will be required to follow a clearly established detour route to navigate around the work zone. To manage the flow of vehicles around the construction site, traffic will be systematically redirected onto Tricont Avenue and Forbes Street. These alternate routes have been selected specifically to handle the rerouted traffic volume effectively while maintaining access to local properties. Drivers are strongly advised to plan their travel routes accordingly in anticipation of these changes and to allow for additional travel time while traversing the detoured streets.

While the current schedule has been established to minimize disruption, the progression of the work remains subject to environmental factors and site conditions. Asphalt paving is highly sensitive to temperature and precipitation; therefore, unfavourable weather conditions such as heavy rain or low temperatures could influence the timeline and necessitate adjustments to the planned work schedule. The Region of Durham monitors these conditions closely and will proceed with the paving operations only when it is safe and practical to achieve a high-quality, lasting result for the asphalt surface. Should a delay occur, updated information will be released immediately.

In addition to vehicular impacts, the Region emphasizes the importance of safety for all road users during this construction period. Drivers are being asked to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling near the site, reducing speed and obeying all posted signage. This alertness is necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians who may be navigating the area, cyclists moving through the detour zones, and the road crews actively working on the pavement. Construction zones are dynamic environments, and vigilance is key to preventing accidents.

To assist residents in staying informed about this project and other ongoing construction across the area, the Region provides a digital resource for real-time updates. Members of the public can view a live interactive map of current construction projects and access up-to-date traffic information by visiting the official Regional website at durham.ca/TrafficWatch. This tool offers transparency regarding the status of municipal infrastructure work, allowing drivers to make informed decisions before leaving their homes.

Acknowledging that such infrastructure projects can cause temporary inconvenience to the daily lives of residents and commuters, the Region of Durham has stated that every effort will be made to complete the paving operations as quickly and efficiently as possible. The work represents a necessary step in maintaining the safety and usability of local roadways, ensuring that the transportation network remains reliable for years to come.
