A Port Perry school Thanksgiving lunch has continued a community tradition that has been held for more than 25 years.
Good Shepherd Catholic School welcomed students, staff, families, parish representatives and community partners to the annual meal on October 7, according to the Durham Catholic District School Board.
School council organizes the annual meal
The school’s Catholic School Council plans, prepares and coordinates the lunch each year. The event has continued through the work of parent volunteers, school staff and local supporters.
Local grocery stores contributed by donating and cooking turkeys, supplying food and offering discounts. A local nursery provided seasonal decorations for the gathering.
Grade 4 and Grade 5 students also made centrepieces for the tables. The student work added a classroom contribution to an event otherwise supported by adult volunteers and community donors.
Tradition centres on gratitude and inclusion
The school board described the lunch as an expression of gratitude, service and community. Organizers said the gathering is intended to help students feel valued, included and connected to their school.
The DCDSB thanked Father Neyomal, the Catholic School Council, donors, volunteers, families and staff for their roles in this year’s event.
The board did not provide an attendance total or identify the businesses that contributed. It also did not give a precise first year for the lunch, describing the tradition as more than 25 years old.
Good Shepherd serves Port Perry families
Good Shepherd Catholic School is part of the Durham Catholic District School Board and serves families in Port Perry and the surrounding Scugog community.
The 2026 Port Perry school Thanksgiving lunch shows how the long-running event continues through contributions from students, families, parish members, businesses and school volunteers.
