Two men are facing charges after fleeing a RIDE checkpoint in Oshawa, crashing into another vehicle and two police cruisers before being located hiding in a residential area, Durham police say.
According to police, the incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Monday, January 12, during a RIDE initiative conducted by Central East Division officers near Stevenson Road and Gibb Street.
Officers attempted to stop a vehicle after observing signs of impairment. Instead of pulling over, the driver fled the checkpoint at a high rate of speed.
A short distance away, the suspect vehicle collided with another motorist but continued to flee. Police say when officers attempted to contain the vehicle, it intentionally struck two police cruisers before continuing through several blocks in a dangerous manner.
The driver and passenger eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
With assistance from the K9 Unit and Remote Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS), officers tracked the suspects and located them hiding in a nearby residential backyard, where both were taken into custody.
A 29-year-old man from Oshawa was held for a bail hearing, while a 32-year-old Oshawa man was released on an undertaking. Names and further details are available through DRPS.
