The Oshawa Run for the Cure returned to Lakeview Park on October 4, bringing survivors, families, volunteers and supporters together for the final edition at that location.
Participants completed five-kilometre and one-kilometre runs and walks to raise money for breast cancer research and support services.
Organizers considering a new location
The 2026 event was the final year at Lakeview Park. Organizers cited parking challenges and are considering other Durham locations for 2027.
Local organizer Chantelle Adair has participated for about 27 years, inspired by her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2002. She noted that people affected by breast cancer can access local care and support through services such as Lakeridge Health Oshawa’s breast assessment centre and Hearth Place.
Local teams joined national effort
A team of more than 50 people from Oxygen Fitness in South Whitby raised more than 9,000 dollars. The Pink Sensation dragon boat team included 24 breast cancer survivors.
Nationally, the Canadian Cancer Society said more than 65,000 participants and volunteers took part in the 35th annual event across more than 50 communities, raising more than 18 million dollars.
The Oshawa Run for the Cure had previously been represented on All About Durham through an October 4 road-closure notice. The event outcome, national fundraising figures and confirmation that Lakeview Park will not host it next year are substantial new developments.
