Dog owners in Durham Region and across Canada are being urged to check their pet food after two varieties of Fromm canned dog food were recalled because of possible metal contamination.
The Fromm dog food recall affects specific lots of Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food and Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté Wet Dog Food distributed through neighbourhood pet stores and online retailers in Canada and the United States.
Fromm Family Foods initiated the voluntary recall after receiving complaints about metal contamination, according to an announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Aug. 21.
Thousands of cases affected
The company is recalling 3,852 cases of Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food and another 1,973 cases of Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté Wet Dog Food.
Only specific lots are affected.
The recalled Fromm Turkey Pâté Wet Dog Food comes in 12.2-ounce cans with UPC 072705118700. The affected lot code is EP2A3306 551006, with a best-by date of March 20, 2029.
The recalled Fromm Diner Classics Milo’s Meatloaf Pâté Wet Dog Food comes in 12.5-ounce cans with UPC 072705132324. Its affected lot code is EP2A3306 551029, also with a best-by date of March 20, 2029.
Fromm says no other products are included in this recall.
Metal could cause serious injuries in dogs
The FDA says dogs that ingest pieces of metal may experience choking, vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy or stomach discomfort.
Sharp metal fragments can potentially cause more serious injuries, including cuts to a dog’s mouth or gastrointestinal tract.
If enough foreign material is swallowed, it could also result in gastrointestinal problems, partial blockage or an intestinal obstruction.
Dog owners whose pets have eaten the recalled food and are showing possible symptoms should contact their veterinarian.
As of the recall announcement, there had been no reports of illness or injury associated with the affected products.
What dog owners should do
Consumers should immediately stop feeding dogs any cans covered by the Fromm dog food recall.
Owners should check the product name, UPC, lot number and best-by date carefully, because other Fromm products are not affected.
Anyone who purchased recalled cans is being instructed to return the food to the retailer where it was purchased.
