Beaverton’s first municipal dog park has officially opened at Mill Gateway Park, giving Brock Township residents two fenced areas designed for off-leash exercise.
The Township of Brock scheduled a ribbon-cutting ceremony for 4 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 at the park, located at 204 Simcoe Street in Beaverton. The opening completes a project that the municipality says followed almost five years of planning and public consultation.
Separate spaces for large and small dogs
The new Beaverton dog park includes approximately 26,650 square feet for large dogs and a separate area of about 2,600 square feet for small dogs. Both areas are fenced.
Double-capture gates have been installed at the entrances. These two-stage gate areas allow owners to enter and close one gate before opening the next, reducing the chance that a dog can slip directly out of the park. Waste receptacles and rules signs are also part of the completed site.
Residents should review the posted rules before letting a dog off leash and remain responsible for supervising and cleaning up after their animals. The divided layout is intended to give smaller dogs an option apart from the larger off-leash area.
A project several years in the making
Brock announced in August that fencing and posts would be installed at Mill Gateway Park beginning August 24. Earlier municipal planning documents had considered the site and the size of the proposed off-leash area, while council also addressed funding needed to complete the project in 2026.
Durham Post reported in August that council chose to proceed this year after staff had discussed deferring the work to 2027. The outlet reported an $8,241.75 funding shortfall, before HST, would be covered from the township’s Tax Rate Stabilization Reserve.
With construction complete, the township is describing the facility as its first dog park. The new amenity adds a dedicated off-leash option in Beaverton while keeping large and small dogs in separately sized enclosures.
