A new Cannington school playground is open after the community raised more than $110,000 for McCaskill’s Mills Public School.
The eight-year effort began in 2018 when aging equipment needed more than $5,000 in repairs. It was repeatedly closed and later removed. The council initially sought about $80,000.
Community exceeds its goal
The Cannington Lions Club made the first major $5,000 donation. From September 2025 through February 2026, families, businesses and groups raised more than $110,000.
The equipment opened in July after years of planning, grant applications, fundraising and setbacks. School council chair Shirley Ostertag said students now have a new place to play. Principal Peter Bozanis called it an example of what a small community can accomplish together.
The Cannington school playground is intended to provide a safe outdoor space for years.
