Durham College says its research, cybersecurity and workforce-training services can help local companies as the Durham defence industry prepares for increased Canadian spending.
College representatives attended an Invest Durham event titled “Building Durham Region’s Defence Industrial Base.”
College highlights research and training
President Elaine Popp said the college can support the skilled workforce, learning and innovation needed for the region to respond to emerging demand.
Durham College identified its AI Hub, Mixed Reality Capture Studio and Centre for Cybersecurity Innovation as resources for small and medium-sized businesses. It has offered research and development services to smaller companies for 15 years.
Corporate Training Services can help employers upskill or reskill workers. College representatives Sushant Katare and Doug Hart joined a panel about defence-ready capacity.
Regional collaboration emphasized
Invest Durham commissioner Sandra Austin said research, workforce development and cybersecurity expertise will be important. Keynote speaker Bernie Derible, Ontario’s Military and Defence Representative, discussed investment and export opportunities.
