A popular chocolate spread sold across Canada has been recalled due to the potential presence of pieces of glass, prompting warnings for Durham Region consumers to check their pantries.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued the recall notice on Tuesday, advising Canadians that the allo simonne brand Milk Chocolate Spread is being pulled from store shelves nationwide. The product was distributed to Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, British Columbia, and was also available for purchase online.
The affected product comes in a 220 gram jar with the UPC number 6 28347 31004 2. Consumers should look for the code 4-281-25 BB 4/27 on the packaging to determine if their jar is part of the chocolate spread recalled in Canada.
No injuries have been reported in connection with the product so far, but the CFIA is urging anyone who has purchased the affected chocolate spread to stop using it immediately. The agency is also warning retailers and distributors not to sell or distribute the recalled product.
The CFIA says it is conducting a food safety investigation which may lead to additional recalls. Durham Region residents who have the product at home should either throw it away or return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.
Food recalls involving physical contaminants such as glass are treated seriously by health officials, as swallowing sharp fragments can cause injury to the mouth, throat, or digestive system. Anyone who has consumed the chocolate spread recalled in Canada and is experiencing discomfort or symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
This recall comes amid a broader pattern of food safety alerts across the country, with several other products pulled from shelves in recent weeks. Consumers are encouraged to sign up for CFIA email notifications to stay informed about the latest food recalls affecting products sold in Ontario and across Canada.
