The Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre in Cannington has reopened after the Township of Brock completed a package of arena refrigeration and infrastructure upgrades.

The reopening returns an important local ice surface to skaters, hockey and ringette players, figure skaters and other community users in time for the new season. The township announced the completed work on September 8 and said the project was delivered on time and below budget.

What changed at the Cannington arena

The Cannington arena upgrades focused on the systems that make and maintain its ice. The work included a new Low-E ceiling, replacement of the main compressor and a complete overhaul of the facility’s second original compressor.

Crews also replaced the existing condenser with an adiabatic condenser. The centre’s hot-water heater and related plumbing were replaced as well, supporting ice making and routine maintenance.

Brock described the improvements as a significant investment in the community centre’s reliability, efficiency and long-term operation. The township did not publish the final project cost in its reopening announcement.

Facility ready for a new season

The Rick MacLeish Memorial Community Centre is one of Brock Township’s community recreation facilities and is located at 91 Elliot Street in Cannington. Its ice pad supports organized sports and public recreation, while the building also contains community space used for local gatherings.

Mayor Mike Jubb said demand for on-ice sports is growing and credited municipal council and staff with completing the work within schedule and under budget. The township also thanked residents and community partners for their patience while the renovations were underway.

The municipality has not identified any continuing construction-related restrictions in its reopening notice. Residents looking for public skating, ice rentals or program times should confirm the current schedule with the Township of Brock before travelling.
