Seven Durham Region community agencies will share $141,000 in provincial funding for repairs, accessibility work and safety upgrades at local facilities.
The September 8 funding announcement covers organizations that support people with disabilities, children and families, women and other residents across Ajax, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.
How the Durham funding is divided
Community Living Oshawa-Clarington will receive the largest local allocation, $67,800, for ramp and deck work, fence repairs and flooring replacement.
Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby is receiving $30,000 for deck repairs. The John Howard Society of Durham will receive $15,000 for foundation repairs and driveway repaving, while the Abilities Centre will receive $11,400 for generator upgrades.
The Durham Children’s Aid Society has been awarded $6,700 to replace an exterior security system. The Oshawa Young Women’s Christian Association will receive $6,000 for repairs to its front porch and stairs.
Sedna Women’s Shelter and Support Services, which operates The Denise House, will receive $4,100 to install an accessible door.
Part of a wider provincial program
The seven awards form part of a $25-million Ontario investment in critical infrastructure repairs at community agencies during the current funding year. The local projects are practical building improvements intended to help organizations continue delivering services in safer, more accessible facilities.
Whitby MPP Lorne Coe said Durham’s community agencies are an important part of the support network used by individuals and families. Ontario’s Minister of Children, Community and Social Services, Michael Parsa, said the investments are intended to let agencies keep focusing on the programs and services they provide.
The announcement did not provide individual construction schedules. Residents who use an affected facility should check directly with the organization for any temporary access changes while repairs are completed.
