The Ajax Urban Farm open house will give visitors a look at sustainable agriculture, student-grown crops and the Barrett Centre’s farm operations on Thursday, October 8.
Durham College is hosting the free drop-in event from noon to 4 p.m. at the Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture, 1355 Harwood Avenue North in Ajax.
The fall open house comes after a separate summer event at the farm in July. The new date, seasonal program and harvest activities make it a distinct community event rather than a duplicate of the earlier open house.
Activities planned at the farm
Visitors can tour farm spaces, meet the farm team and learn how Durham College students participate in growing seasonal crops. The program also includes hands-on activities, urban-agriculture demonstrations and a chance to meet the beekeeper.
A culinary demonstration is scheduled from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Farm tours and an on-site market selling fresh produce are also planned during the afternoon.
The college describes the event as an opportunity for residents, families and colleagues to explore sustainable urban agriculture and celebrate the fall harvest. No admission fee or advance registration requirement is listed on the event page.
Because activities are held at a working farm, visitors should dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear. The source page does not list a rain date.
The Barrett Centre combines food production, student learning, applied research and community programming. Its Ajax farm includes growing spaces used to teach urban-agriculture practices and produce seasonal food.
