Francophone families and community members can help choose a name for a new Ajax French elementary school scheduled to open in September 2027.
Conseil scolaire Viamonde is accepting proposals until Sunday, October 11, through a consultation page created specifically for the Ajax school. People submitting an idea are asked to explain the meaning behind the proposed name.
The Ajax project is one of three new Viamonde elementary schools expected to open in September 2027. The other two will be in Chatham and west Hamilton.
Names must reflect French-language public education
Viamonde says proposals must reflect the secular, French-language public education system. A school name could honour a francophone person recognized in the arts, education, history, politics, science or another field.
Suggestions may also be based on the history, culture, geography or traditions of the local community. The board has not announced a shortlist or preferred theme for the Ajax school.
Submitting the same name more than once will not improve its chances. Representative committees from the school communities will assess proposals according to their merit, meaning and compliance with the board’s criteria.
Final name requires ministry approval
After the community review, a recommendation will go to the school board. The selected name must then be presented to Ontario’s Ministry of Education for final approval.
Viamonde announced the naming process on September 24. The board said the three openings will bring its elementary-school network to 44 schools by September 2027.
The dedicated Ajax consultation page provides the submission form and current participation details. The announcement does not state when the chosen name will be revealed.
