An Ajax brain cancer fundraiser has raised $70,826 to help resident Walter Wallace obtain equipment, therapy and transportation needed for care at home.
Wallace was diagnosed last October with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Durham Post reported that he has since experienced a fall, a stroke and five pulmonary embolisms, leaving him unable to walk or use his right arm.
After spending three weeks in hospital, Wallace returned home but has remained largely confined to bed because of the extent of his medical needs.
Fundraiser exceeds its original goal
His wife, Lisa, organized the online fundraiser with an initial target of $35,000. Contributions had reached $70,826 when the campaign was reported, more than twice the original goal.
The family said the support will be used to improve Walter’s comfort, safety and independence. Planned expenses include a hospital bed, wheelchair ramp, stair lift, wheelchair and sit-to-stand support equipment. A Hoyer lift may also be needed.
Funds are also intended for private home care, physiotherapy and transportation to medical appointments when those costs are not covered by insurance.
Family thanks the Ajax community
Walter and Lisa thanked supporters and said they intend to pay the generosity forward. The campaign describes Wallace as someone known for helping friends, relatives and strangers before his diagnosis.
The amount raised reflects donations recorded at the time of the local report and may continue to change as the campaign remains active.
The Ajax brain cancer fundraiser focuses on practical supports for daily life at home while Wallace remains under specialized medical care.
