Jim McCafferty is retiring from the Durham Catholic District School Board after 35 consecutive years representing Pickering as a school trustee.
The board announced the recognition on October 14 after honouring McCafferty during a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School. Staff, students and clergy took part in the celebration of his service to Catholic education and the community.
Recognition at St. Mary
McCafferty received a special blessing and a congratulatory letter from Bishop Vincent Nguyen. Fr. Eduardo presented the letter on behalf of the Archdiocese and led the Mass, according to the board.
DCDSB credited the retiring trustee with advocating for students and families and supporting student achievement and well-being throughout his time in office.
Service beyond the trustee role
The board’s tribute also described McCafferty’s involvement with special education and community organizations. His service included the DCDSB Special Education Advisory Committee and the Minister of Education’s Special Advisory Council.
A longtime parishioner of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Parish, he has served as a Eucharistic Minister, usher and lector. The board also noted contributions involving the Knights of Columbus, Scouts Canada and SickKids Hospital.
His honours include the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association Award of Merit, the Ron St. Marie Council for Exceptional Children Award and the Access Award.
The board thanked Jim McCafferty for his leadership and wished him well in retirement. Daily Durham also reported the recognition and his departure after 35 consecutive years as Pickering trustee.
