Ontario Tech wildfire smoke research is highlighting potential health effects that can extend beyond the coughing, eye irritation and shortness of breath people may experience during a smoky day.
Researchers at the Oshawa university say repeated exposure to wildfire smoke may be linked to longer-term concerns including heart disease, stroke, adverse pregnancy outcomes, cognitive decline and psychological distress. Their comments were published by Ontario Tech University on September 10.
A central concern is PM2.5, fine particulate matter small enough to travel deep into the lungs. Dr. Caroline Barakat, a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, explained that these particles can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation elsewhere in the body.
Barakat said the scientific understanding of wildfire smoke is expanding beyond its immediate respiratory effects. Research increasingly points to possible cardiovascular, developmental and mental-health consequences from repeated exposure. Her work has also found an association between greater exposure to fine-particle air pollution in childhood and chronic inflammatory conditions later in life.
Some people face greater risks
Dr. Mika Nonoyama, an Ontario Tech associate professor and registered respiratory therapist, said otherwise healthy people can experience temporary throat irritation, burning eyes, coughing and mild shortness of breath during heavy smoke. Those symptoms generally ease as exposure falls.
For people living with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or another respiratory illness, smoke can worsen existing airway inflammation. A flare-up can reduce exercise tolerance, disrupt daily activities, increase reliance on rescue medication and sometimes lead to emergency care.
Children, older adults, pregnant people and those with underlying heart or lung conditions are among the groups considered more susceptible. The researchers also pointed to unequal exposure risks for outdoor workers, lower-income households, people experiencing homelessness and anyone without reliable access to cleaner indoor air.
The Ontario Tech wildfire smoke research also notes that Indigenous communities can face repeated smoke events, evacuations and service disruptions. Those overlapping impacts can make a health emergency harder to manage.
Nonoyama advised people not to judge risk by visibility alone because smoke can remain harmful even when outdoor conditions look relatively clear. Air-quality advisories and local health guidance provide a better basis for decisions about outdoor activity.
