Durham school zone enforcement during a back-to-school ride-along resulted in several drivers being stopped for alleged speeding in Whitby, Oshawa and other community safety zones.

Durham Post reported that Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira began the September 8 enforcement event at Julie Payette Public School in Whitby. The chief stopped a driver who was allegedly travelling 20 km/h above the posted limit and discussed the higher penalties that apply in a community safety zone.

Other officers reported additional stops during the regional campaign. Police said one driver was recorded at 75 km/h in a posted 40 km/h zone. If convicted, that offence would carry a $520 fine and four demerit points, according to the report.

At an Oshawa location near a daycare and two schools, an officer stopped a driver allegedly travelling 72 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. Police said the resulting ticket was $180 and the driver could receive three demerit points upon conviction.

Another driver was reportedly recorded at 67 km/h in a 40 km/h school zone during the first 10 minutes of enforcement. The report listed a $101.25 fine and three possible demerit points.

DRPS used the ride-along to remind motorists to watch for students, crossing guards, cyclists and school buses. Police also emphasized that fines are doubled in designated community safety zones.

The Durham school zone enforcement figures describe alleged provincial offences. Any demerit points or final penalties depend on conviction.
