Young skateboarders will have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills when the free Pickering Skateboard Jam arrives at West Shore Skate Spot next month.
The event will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. at the West Shore Community Centre Skate Spot, located at 1011–1015 Bayly Street in Pickering.
The free event is open to Pickering residents between the ages of 13 and 19 and is being offered through the City of Pickering’s Free Teen Stuff program.
Organizers are promising an energetic afternoon of skateboarding, friendly competition and community connections for local youth.
Participants will be given two 60-second runs to showcase their abilities, creativity and individual skating styles. The event will also include an overall best-trick challenge, with prizes awarded to the top performers.
Although the event includes competitive elements, it is being promoted as an informal skateboard jam rather than a formal sanctioned competition.
The West Shore Skate Spot is an approximately 3,000-square-foot outdoor facility developed beside the West Shore Community Centre. The space was designed with a variety of features intended to accommodate skateboarders with different experience and skill levels.
The skateboard jam is part of Pickering’s broader effort to provide accessible recreational activities for teenagers throughout the community.
Pickering’s Free Teen Stuff initiative offers free programs and events for residents ages 13 to 19. Its summer schedule includes activities such as skateboarding, volleyball, pickleball, basketball, breakdancing, drama, ball hockey and social game nights at recreation facilities and schools across the city.
A free Teen Stuff membership is required to participate in the city’s teen programs and special events. Parent or guardian verification is required when a participant attends for the first time.
