A 73-year-old dirt biker is in hospital with serious injuries after losing control of his bike and crashing into a tree in Clarington on Friday morning.

The Clarington dirt bike crash occurred just before 11 a.m. on Friday, May 16 on the unmaintained portion of Boundary Road near Enfield Road, north of the hamlet of Enfield in north Clarington. Durham Regional Police say the man was riding his dirt bike eastbound when he suddenly lost control and struck a tree off the roadway and trail.

Members of the Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and roads in the surrounding area were closed for several hours while evidence was collected and investigators documented the crash site in detail. The investigation team conducted a thorough examination of the area, looking for factors that may have contributed to the single-vehicle collision.

Police are now appealing to the public for any information about the incident. Anyone with cell phone footage, dash cam video, surveillance footage or other details about the collision is asked to contact Detective Constable Kollard of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5267.

Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters who provide information that assists the investigation may be eligible for a cash reward.

The DRPS Collision Investigation Unit is responsible for investigating serious and fatal collisions across all municipalities in Durham Region. The specialized unit works to determine contributing factors such as road conditions, speed, impairment, and mechanical issues, as well as whether charges are warranted in each case they investigate.

Boundary Road in the Enfield area is a rural route in north Clarington that includes unmaintained sections popular with off-road vehicle enthusiasts. The road runs through agricultural land and wooded areas between Regional Road 57 and Regional Road 20 in the northern part of the municipality. The terrain in this area can be challenging, with uneven surfaces and natural obstacles that require careful navigation, especially for riders who are not familiar with the landscape.

This Clarington dirt bike crash serves as a reminder of the risks associated with operating off-road vehicles, particularly for older riders who may face increased vulnerability in the event of a collision. Police encourage all dirt bike and off-road vehicle operators to wear appropriate safety gear including helmets and protective clothing, ride within their abilities, and exercise caution on unfamiliar or unmaintained terrain at all times.

The investigation into the Clarington dirt bike crash remains ongoing and further details may be released as they become available to the public. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has relevant information is urged to come forward and contact police immediately.
