A major morning commute artery east of Port Perry was brought to a complete standstill on Tuesday following a serious multi-vehicle collision. According to details released by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Highway Safety Division, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of the Highway 7A Collision 2026 site near the intersection of Island Road just before 7:00 a.m. on May 19. The emergency response forced a total closure of the regional commuter link in both directions, backing up early morning industrial and local residential traffic.
First responders arriving at the intersection confirmed that three passenger vehicles were involved in the high-energy impact. Photographic evidence from the collision site displayed severe front-end damage to two of the primary vehicles involved, leaving debris scattered across both travel lanes.
Emergency Response and Driver Status
Paramedics from the Durham Region West Department stabilized the occupants at the scene before transport options were finalized.
-
The Injuries: Two drivers involved in the multi-vehicle crash sustained injuries severe enough to require direct transportation to a regional hospital facility.
-
Medical Assessment: The OPP has since confirmed that the sustained physical traumas are officially classified as non-life-threatening.
-
Occupant Status: The third occupant was evaluated at the intersection and did not require immediate emergency hospital admission.
Clearing Operations and Traffic Impact
Because the three-vehicle crash completely blocked the lanes leading to the Scugog Island causeway, police implemented full detour parameters, rerouting local drivers away from the Island Road junction. OPP collision reconstruction and forensic processing teams managed the immediate scene investigation while heavy tow trucks worked to winch the mangled vehicle frames from the provincial right-of-way.
Following the successful removal of the vehicle wreckage and the sweeping of structural debris from the asphalt, the highway was declared safe by provincial officers. The Highway 7A Collision 2026 corridor has since been fully reopened to standard vehicular traffic in both directions. Despite the clearing of the lanes, local police are reminding commuters that residual gridlock along peripheral rural routes north of Port Perry may take time to completely dissolve. The cause of the initial three-car interaction remains under active investigation by regional OPP investigators.
