The Whitby Library CBC Kids Reads celebration is moving from the library floor to television, with the programme scheduled to air on October 19.
Whitby Public Library says more than 2,000 people attended the live event at its Central Library on September 12. Families took part in reading, games and crafts while television production unfolded at the branch.
The library has confirmed the October 19 CBC TV broadcast on its event recap page. Canadian Children’s Book News, a programme of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, lists the special for 9 a.m. local time on CBC TV, CBC Gem and the CBC Kids YouTube channel.
Canadian picture books take centre stage
The 2026 competition features five shortlisted Canadian picture books, with the winner to be announced during the special. The shortlist was selected from a longer list of 15 titles.
The library’s account describes visits from familiar children’s television characters, opportunities to read the nominated books and a behind-the-scenes view of production. It calls the September gathering a celebration of literacy, creativity and community.
The television broadcast gives local families another opportunity to see the reading celebration that took place in Whitby. This is a broadcast preview, not an invitation to attend a second live event at the library.
