Uxbridge voting letters that arrive for former residents or people who have died should be returned unopened, the township says, after residents raised concerns about receiving other people’s election information.
The Uxbridge Cosmos reported on October 14 that some households had received more than one voter information letter, including letters for people who no longer lived at the address. Its report attributes the township’s response to clerk Debbie Leroux.
The concerns do not establish that additional votes have been cast. The issue reported is the delivery of letters containing voting credentials to outdated addresses.
How to return an incorrect letter
The township’s official voter-information page asks residents to mark the unopened envelope “Return to Sender – Moved” or “Return to Sender – Deceased,” as appropriate, and return it through the mail.
Election staff will deactivate the PIN and try to verify the change when the returned letter is received, according to the township. A resident’s own voter information letter should be kept safely for personal use.
People who have not received their own letter, or whose personal information needs correction, can contact the township at 905-852-9181 or attend a voter assistance centre.
Online voting opened October 13 and closes at 8 p.m. on October 26. The new concern about misdirected letters is distinct from the previously announced voting schedule.
