The Whitby Fire Training Tower is taking shape at Whitby Fire and Emergency Services headquarters, giving local firefighters a new purpose-built facility for realistic emergency-response training.
Construction is progressing at 111 McKinney Drive, with the project expected to be completed later in 2026.
Major work on the tower’s burn rooms and specialized training props is already underway. Remaining work will include final safety-equipment installation, inspections and certifications before the facility can become operational.
Tower designed for realistic firefighter training
The new training structure is being designed to reflect the variety of buildings firefighters may encounter across Whitby.
One side of the tower will resemble a two-storey residential home, allowing crews to practise responding to emergencies in neighbourhood settings.
Other sections will recreate a downtown streetscape, a high-rise environment and an industrial setting.
By combining several building types into one facility, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services will be able to conduct exercises that more closely resemble real incidents throughout the community.
Live-fire and rescue exercises planned
Firefighters will use the Whitby Fire Training Tower for a wide range of practical exercises.
Planned training includes live-fire scenarios, high-rise firefighting, search-and-rescue operations and technical rescues.
The burn rooms will allow firefighters to train under controlled conditions while practising fire suppression, crew coordination and movement through smoke-filled environments.
Technical rescue exercises can also help crews maintain skills needed for emergencies involving difficult access, elevated locations or other complex conditions.
The tower’s varied design is intended to give firefighters opportunities to practise different strategies depending on the type of structure involved.
Training reflects Whitby’s changing landscape
Whitby continues to grow, with new residential neighbourhoods, commercial development, taller buildings and industrial properties changing the types of emergencies local firefighters may encounter.
The new facility is intended to help emergency crews prepare for those evolving conditions.
Training in a structure that resembles the local built environment can allow firefighters to practise decision-making, equipment use and team communication before encountering similar conditions during an actual emergency.

Fire Headquarters hosts new facility
