A routine Wednesday evening at a Whitby used car dealership was shattered by a brazen act of violence that has left the local community on edge. Durham Regional Police responded to an “armed person” call in the area of Hopkins Street and Dundas Street East at approximately 5:30 p.m. on April 15. Upon arrival, officers from the Central West Division discovered several spent bullet casings scattered across the property. Police Chief Peter Moreira condemned the shooting, describing it as a total disregard for public safety and a crime that will not be tolerated within the region.

Surveillance footage captured the terrifying sequence of events in high detail. The video shows a suspect arriving at the dealership parking lot in a white Honda CR-V. After exiting the vehicle, the suspect fired multiple shots directly at a trailer located on the property before quickly fleeing the area in the same vehicle. Fortunately, despite the timing of the incident during business hours, police have confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the Whitby dealership shooting. The intentional nature of the attack on the trailer has led investigators to treat this as a targeted incident rather than a random act of violence.

The Durham Regional Police Service has taken the step of releasing the surveillance video to the public in hopes of identifying the shooter. The suspect’s vehicle, a white Honda CR-V, is a primary focus of the investigation, and authorities are working to track its movements following the 5:30 p.m. shooting. This level of public violence in a commercial district has prompted a heavy police response and renewed calls for community vigilance in the Dundas Street East corridor.

Detective McCracken of the Central West Division is currently leading the inquiry into the Whitby dealership shooting. Investigators are specifically asking anyone who was in the vicinity of Hopkins Street and Dundas Street East between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to check their recording devices. This includes cell phone video, vehicle dash cams, and any private residential or commercial surveillance systems that may have captured the white Honda CR-V or the suspect.

As the search for the suspect continues, the local business community remains concerned about the “brazen” nature of the attack. Police have reinforced that they are utilizing all available resources to locate the individuals involved. For those who wish to provide information anonymously, tips can be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers. The investigation into the Whitby dealership shooting remains active as forensic teams analyze the recovered shell casings for potential ballistic matches.
