The Region of Durham is currently seeking public input regarding a proposed infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the Township of Uxbridge. The municipality has unveiled plans to construct a new single-lane roundabout at the busy intersection of Brock Road, also known as Regional Road 1, and Goodwood Road, or Regional Road 21. As the region moves forward with the preliminary design phases, officials are encouraging residents and stakeholders to review the project details and submit their comments prior to the upcoming deadline.

According to the Region of Durham, the current intersection configuration will undergo significant modification to accommodate the proposed circular traffic calming measure. This planned conversion is intended to replace the existing layout with a design proven to keep vehicles moving while significantly reducing the severity of collisions compared to traditional intersections. In addition to the central roundabout, the scope of work includes the construction of an eastbound truck climbing lane. This specific addition is designed to assist heavy transport vehicles navigating the area’s topography, further smoothing out the flow of mixed traffic along this vital corridor.

Transportation planners have identified this location as a priority for improvement due to anticipated long-term growth in the northern part of the region. The primary objectives of the Brock Road and Goodwood Road project are to enhance overall road safety for all users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, while simultaneously reducing congestion delays. By implementing a roundabout, the region aims to eliminate the wait times associated with traffic signals, thereby decreasing idling and improving travel efficiency for commuters passing through the Township of Uxbridge.

To ensure that the final design reflects the needs of the community, the Region has made a comprehensive public information package available for review. This document provides the necessary background regarding the intersection’s history and outlines the engineering rationale behind the chosen design. Residents interested in the future development of their local road network are invited to review these materials at the region’s official project portal. Feedback gathered during this consultation period will be carefully analyzed by engineers as they finalize the technical plans ahead of the eventual construction phase.

The deadline for members of the public to submit their comments and questions regarding the proposed roundabout has been firmly set for June 1. This timeline allows the project team sufficient time to analyze community input and incorporate feasible suggestions into the final strategy. The Region of Durham emphasizes that public participation is a critical component of the municipal planning process, helping to ensure that infrastructure investments effectively serve the local population and align with the broader goals of the Durham Transportation Master Plan.

This project is part of a wider effort by Regional Council to maintain and upgrade transportation infrastructure across Durham’s diverse municipalities. As Uxbridge continues to experience residential and commercial development, upgrades to major arterial roads like Brock Road are essential for supporting economic activity and maintaining connectivity between rural and urban centres. Once the consultation phase concludes and the design is finalized, the region will move forward with scheduling the construction, aiming to minimize disruption to the travelling public while delivering these critical safety improvements.

Residents can access the full details of the proposal and submit their feedback through the dedicated webpage at durham.ca/BrockGoodwoodRoundabout. With the June 1 deadline approaching, local stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the process to help shape the future of transportation safety in the Township of Uxbridge.
