Residents Share Mixed Reactions to New Left-Turn Restrictions at Oshawa Intersection

New left-turn restrictions planned for the intersection of Harmony Road South and Tennyson Avenue are drawing mixed reactions from residents who live nearby, despite the Region of Durham saying the changes are intended to improve safety.

Beginning in late January, drivers will no longer be permitted to make northbound left turns from Harmony Road onto Tennyson Avenue, or eastbound left turns from Tennyson onto Harmony Road, during weekday peak hours from 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.

The intersection sits on a slope just north of Highway 401 on- and off-ramps, and residents say traffic congestion and speeding already make the area difficult to navigate.

While Durham Region officials say the restrictions aim to reduce collisions and improve road safety, some residents question whether the measures will be effective.

Local resident Coty Diotte said the restrictions may be difficult to enforce and believes a traffic signal would be a better solution. Others suggested alternatives such as rumble strips or four-way stop signs.

“There’s no way to fix it without a light,” Diotte said, adding concerns that serious injuries could continue without stronger measures.

The intersection has a tragic history. In 2017, Stacey Rinaldi died after being critically injured in a multi-vehicle collision at the same location. Another woman and her infant were treated for minor injuries in that crash.

Resident Gerald Newton, who has lived near the intersection for nearly 30 years, said he avoids the area altogether due to safety concerns.

“I never, ever go out here,” Newton said. “It’s dangerous.”

Newton said he has witnessed dozens of collisions over the years and has helped drivers after crashes. He believes speeding — not turning movements — is the main issue.

“People have to slow down,” he said.

Other residents raised concerns about access, noting that Wilson Road is one of the few alternative routes out of the neighbourhood.

“This is not helpful for everybody,” said Asm Nur Uddin Kamal, echoing concerns that the restrictions could make it harder for residents to enter and exit the area.

Durham Region has said the changes are intended to improve safety, but some residents say they hope further solutions will be considered if problems persist.
