A milestone of one million Greenbelt trees planted across Ontario since 2022 was marked this week at Heber Down Conservation Area in Whitby.

Forests Canada and the Greenbelt Foundation held the National Forest Week event at the conservation area. A guided hike followed the celebration, highlighting how carefully planned tree planting can strengthen forest cover near cities and in rural areas.

Planting aims to build climate resilience

The organizations said strategic planting means putting suitable trees in suitable locations. Their stated goals include increasing biodiversity, improving water quality and helping communities manage flooding and extreme heat.

Forests also help stabilize shorelines and watersheds, absorb and manage stormwater, moderate local temperatures and provide habitat. The Greenbelt Foundation said restoration work can also support employment, nature-based tourism and recreation while reducing some costs associated with climate impacts.

The Greenbelt’s connected natural systems provide habitat for 121 species at risk, according to information released for the event. Organizers said protecting and expanding that network is increasingly important as the Greater Golden Horseshoe grows.

Regional forest-cover target remains much larger

The one-million-tree milestone is part of a longer-term restoration effort. A 2021 Southern Ontario Nature Coalition report identified a need for 54 million native trees across the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Greenbelt to reach 30 per cent healthy forest cover.

Organizers connected that target with Canada’s commitment to conserve 30 per cent of its lands and waters by 2030. The event did not state that one million trees were planted at Heber Down itself; the Whitby conservation area hosted the celebration of plantings made across the Greenbelt since 2022.

Forests Canada chief executive Jess Kaknevicius credited the milestone to the many participating partners. Greenbelt Foundation chief executive Edward McDonnell said the benefits extend beyond individual planting sites through stronger forests, wildlife habitat and water systems.

For Durham residents, the Heber Down gathering placed a province-wide restoration milestone at a familiar local conservation area. The organizations have not yet published a municipality-by-municipality breakdown of the one million Greenbelt trees.
