The DCDSB phonics diagnostic is being used with junior and intermediate students to identify foundational reading skills that may need additional support.
The Durham Catholic District School Board described the assessment in an October 13 update. It says the tool helps educators identify gaps in phonics knowledge that can affect word reading and spelling.
Although phonics instruction is commonly associated with the early grades, the board says some older students also benefit from targeted work on particular spelling and word-reading patterns.
Identifying support needs
DCDSB says identifying and addressing those needs is intended to help students read more accurately, automatically and confidently. Stronger reading fluency can in turn support comprehension and learning across subjects.
The board’s update explains the purpose of the diagnostic. It does not release assessment scores, identify individual students or report a board-wide improvement figure.
This report is based on the DCDSB’s October 13 explanation of its phonics diagnostic.
