Free Courtice energy centre tours will be offered to families during the school PA day on Monday, October 26.
The Durham York Energy Centre will open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1835 Energy Drive in Courtice. No advance registration is required, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
The facility handles residual municipal waste from Durham and York regions. The event shows families what happens after household garbage is collected.
Control room and waste-pit views
Guided tours include the control-room area, where visitors can see the waste pit and the large claw used to move material through the facility.
Staff will explain the five Rs: rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Interactive games, activity books, stickers, temporary tattoos and photo opportunities are planned. Information displays will explain the facility, and team members will answer questions.
October 26 is a board-wide non-instructional day for Durham students. The tour is a separate event from the school-closure notice previously published by All About Durham.
The source notice does not list timed departures, accessibility arrangements or restrictions on bags and photography. Families needing accommodations should confirm details before travelling.
