The Bowmanville Community Complex dome welcomed approximately 1,700 people at its October 3 open house, marking the first completed major phase of Clarington’s new recreation centre.
The opening came less than a year and a half after construction began. It is Clarington’s first new recreation centre in nearly 20 years.
FIFA-sized turf and indoor track
The 100,000-square-foot dome is about four times larger than the former indoor soccer centre. It contains a FIFA-sized field and a three-lane, 370-metre walking track.
The turf has no traditional rubber-crumb infill and supports numerous sports. Local clubs participated in the open house.
Programs begin October 13
The first regular season starts October 13. The lineup was shaped by feedback from more than 1,400 residents.
The complex is opening in phases. Future amenities include courts, a skating trail, aquatics centre, splash pad and fitness space. The project received a $10-million provincial grant.
The opening substantially advances earlier notices: attendance is known and the Bowmanville Community Complex dome is preparing for programming.
