The new St. Cecilia Catholic school under construction in Bowmanville has received its official name from the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board.
The board selected St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School after hundreds of public suggestions. The building is at Northglen Boulevard and Middle Road, near Concession Street East and Bowmanville Avenue.
Community feedback shaped the name
A committee developed a shortlist consistent with board policy, collected community rankings and consulted the Bishop of the Diocese of Peterborough before approval.
The name will go to Ontario’s Ministry of Education for approval in the spring. The board will also develop school colours and a crest or logo. St. Cecilia is traditionally recognized as the patron saint of music and musicians.
School designed for nearly 500 pupils
The school is expected to accommodate nearly 500 Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. Plans include a three-room child-care centre, gymnasium, learning commons and access to the neighbouring park.
Construction remains underway. Opening and attendance-boundary details will be communicated as work and approvals progress.
