A 23-year-old Ajax man wanted after two Oshawa officers were struck by a Tesla has surrendered to Durham Regional Police and been arrested.
The arrest is a substantial update to an investigation that began in north Oshawa during the early hours of September 22, 2026.
Two officers were injured during investigation
Police said Central East Division officers saw an Acura sedan travelling on Simcoe Street North without its lights and at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the Acura allegedly fled.
The vehicle was later found parked and unoccupied in a residential driveway. After searching the neighbourhood, police located its alleged driver hiding in a backyard and arrested him. A search of the Acura allegedly found drugs and a replica firearm.
While officers continued that investigation, a Tesla SUV allegedly entered the area at high speed. Police said officers approached after the Tesla stopped, but the driver then reversed, struck two officers and fled.
One officer was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A second officer attended hospital with minor injuries.
Suspect surrendered on October 1
Durham police said the wanted man turned himself in on October 1 and was arrested without incident.
Yaseen Waggan of Ajax is charged with failing to stop for police, dangerous operation, two counts of assault causing bodily harm, three counts of failing to comply with a release order, failing to identify himself to an officer and failing to remain.
Police said he was also arrested on outstanding charges tied to a June road-rage incident and faces two counts of assault with a weapon. He was held for a bail hearing. The charges have not been proven in court.
