The Region of Durham is marking Black History Month Durham Region with a renewed commitment to equity, inclusion and youth empowerment.
In a statement issued from Whitby, Regional Chair and CEO John Henry noted that this year marks 30 years of Black History Month in Canada, recognizing the voices, resilience and achievements of Black Canadians whose leadership continues to shape communities today.
Henry emphasized that Black History Month is both a celebration and a call to action — encouraging reflection on historical contributions while addressing ongoing systemic barriers and anti-Black racism.
He added that building inclusive communities requires listening to lived experiences, fostering honest dialogue and working collaboratively to remove barriers to equity.
As part of these efforts, the Region, in partnership with Durham Regional Police Services, local municipalities and community organizations, will host its annual Black History Month event titled “Together We Rise Durham: Legacy ignites the path for youth to lead the future.”
The event will take place on February 3 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Milestone Christian Centre, located at 610 Monarch Avenue in Ajax. The evening will feature the Legacy Café, bringing together youth and elders to share stories, learn from one another and celebrate Black heritage across Durham Region.
