A Whitby Cyclist Collision left a 14-year-old boy with serious injuries after he was struck by a pickup truck near Garden Street and Manning Road on Wednesday evening.

Durham Regional Police responded to the intersection shortly before 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving a young cyclist and a vehicle.

The teenager was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening. The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Collision occurred near crosswalk

Police said the teenager was riding southbound on Garden Street within the crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck making a right turn.

The pickup was driven by a 40-year-old woman who was also travelling southbound before attempting the turn.

Investigators have not announced any charges, and the circumstances surrounding the collision remain under review.

Police have not released additional information about the teenager’s condition, whether he was wearing a helmet or whether visibility, speed or road conditions contributed to the incident.

The allegations and initial descriptions of the collision remain subject to the ongoing police investigation.

Intersection closed for investigation

The intersection of Garden Street and Manning Road was closed for several hours while members of the Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.

Collision investigators typically document vehicle positions, roadway evidence, sightlines and other physical details that may help determine how an incident occurred.

The closure allowed officers to work safely and preserve evidence before the intersection reopened to traffic.

Garden Street is a busy north-south route through Whitby, while Manning Road serves nearby residential neighbourhoods north of the town’s downtown area.

The temporary closure may have caused delays for drivers travelling through central Whitby during the late evening.

Police seek witnesses and video

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the Whitby Cyclist Collision or recorded the area around the time of the incident to contact police.

Officers are particularly interested in cellphone recordings, dash-camera video, doorbell-camera footage or commercial surveillance recordings that may show the cyclist, the pickup truck or traffic conditions before the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Hoevenaars of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5255.

Anonymous information can be provided to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or through its online tip service. People providing information anonymously may be eligible for a cash reward when their tip assists an investigation.

Police have not released the identities of the teenager or the driver.

Investigation remains active

The driver remaining at the scene does not determine responsibility for the collision. Investigators must review the available evidence before deciding whether charges or other enforcement action are appropriate.

Anyone who recorded video should preserve the original file with its timestamp and avoid editing or compressing it before providing it to investigators.

The Whitby Cyclist Collision also serves as a reminder that drivers must watch carefully for cyclists and pedestrians when approaching intersections and making turns.

Cyclists should remain alert around turning vehicles and use visible clothing and bicycle lighting when travelling in low-light conditions. However, police have not said that the teenager’s actions or equipment contributed to this particular collision.

The investigation remains active, and Durham police may release further information if the teenager’s condition changes, charges are laid or additional evidence becomes available. The core details of the collision were also independently reported by another Toronto-area news outlet.
