An Oshawa Hit-and-Run left a male pedestrian with life-threatening injuries Thursday morning after he was struck by a vehicle near Nonquon Road and Mary Street North.

Durham Regional Police were called to the north Oshawa area at approximately 10:30 a.m. on August 6 following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian.

Police said the injured man was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre in critical condition. The driver involved allegedly left the scene before officers arrived.

No description of the driver or suspect vehicle had been released at the time of the initial report.

Collision reported in north Oshawa

The collision occurred near Nonquon Road and Mary Street North, in the broader area of Taunton Road East and Simcoe Street North.

This part of Oshawa includes residential buildings, businesses and roads used by pedestrians, transit passengers and drivers travelling through the city’s north end.

Emergency crews responded after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been struck. Because of the seriousness of the injuries, the man was transported by air ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto.

Police have not released his age or identity.

Driver allegedly fled the scene

Investigators said the vehicle involved did not remain at the collision scene.

Leaving the scene of a serious collision prevents emergency responders and police from immediately speaking with the driver and examining the vehicle. Investigators will now work to identify both the vehicle and the person operating it.

Police had not confirmed the vehicle’s make, model, colour, direction of travel or possible damage when the first information was released.

No arrests or charges had been announced.

The Oshawa Hit-and-Run remains an active investigation, and additional details may be released after officers review evidence and speak with witnesses.

Police may seek video evidence

Although a formal public appeal was not included in the initial report, investigations of this type commonly rely on surveillance recordings and witness accounts.

Residents, businesses and drivers who were near Nonquon Road, Mary Street North, Taunton Road East or Simcoe Street North around 10:30 a.m. should preserve any relevant video.

Useful evidence could include:

  • Dash-camera recordings
  • Doorbell-camera footage
  • Residential or commercial security video
  • Photographs of a damaged vehicle
  • Observations of unusual driving near the collision scene

Anyone with immediate information about a serious hit-and-run should contact Durham Regional Police rather than approaching a possible suspect.

DRPS advises people involved in hit-and-run situations where another driver has fled to contact police, with emergency incidents requiring a 911 call.

Separate from earlier collision at same intersection

This incident should not be confused with a March 12 collision at Mary Street North and Nonquon Road.

In that earlier case, a 32-year-old pedestrian suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle. Durham police reported that the driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The August 6 case involves a different pedestrian, critical injuries and an allegation that the driver fled.

Investigation remains ongoing

Police will likely examine roadway evidence, nearby cameras, witness statements and any vehicle debris found at the scene.

Investigators may also check repair facilities or reports of vehicles with recent front-end, windshield or side damage if evidence suggests a particular point of impact.

The driver’s departure remains an allegation until police identify the individual and the case is tested through the court process.

The Oshawa Hit-and-Run investigation remains active, with the pedestrian receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.

Residents should watch for updated information from Durham Regional Police, including any suspect-vehicle description, witness appeal, road closure information or change in the victim’s condition.
