The hockey world is mourning the loss of David Branch, a longtime Ontario Hockey League commissioner and Whitby resident, who passed away Sunday at the age of 77.

Branch served as commissioner of the OHL for 45 years, from 1979 to 2024, and was widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in Canadian junior hockey.

Current OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford described Branch as a visionary leader whose impact on the league will be felt for generations.

“David’s contributions to the game of hockey will continue to impact the game for generations,” Crawford said in a statement. “He always prioritized players and their experience, and the entire league mourns the loss of a great leader.”

During his tenure, Branch championed initiatives focused on player safety, mental health support, and educational advancement. He also played a key role in strengthening the OHL scholarship program, ensuring players had access to post-secondary education after their hockey careers.

Branch also served as president of the Canadian Hockey League from 1996 to 2019, where he worked to enhance player development and improve the overall junior hockey experience nationwide.

CHL president Dan MacKenzie credited Branch’s leadership with shaping the modern junior hockey system.

“The CHL would not be the top development hockey league in the world without David Branch,” MacKenzie said. “His relentless focus on the player experience will be his greatest legacy.”

Branch was honoured with the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2016 and was inducted into the Whitby Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 as a builder, recognizing his long-standing support for local minor hockey.

Funeral arrangements and memorial service details are expected to be announced in the coming days.
